SIDS is the second-ranking cause of death in infants between one month and one year of age. Of the 33,466 infant deaths that occurred in 1993, almost one in seven (14%) were caused by SIDS.1
Public health note: Experts have concluded that sleeping position is a contributing factor in the occurrence of SIDS and recommend that babies be placed on their backs or sides.1
