While there was a slight decline in overall incidence of white 12 graders having reported smoking during the previous month, there was an increase among black and Hispanic seniors.

There has been a steady increase in smoking among Hispanic seniors since 1994 and among black seniors since 1992.

The incidence of smoking steadily declined among high school seniors for years, but started to increase among both white and black seniors in the early 1990s.

Nationally, white adolescents are more likely to use all forms of tobacco than are blacks and Hispanics.

White students were significantly more likely than black and Hispanic students to report frequent cigarette use.
