The tobacco industry spends big money to influence girls to start smoking.

The tobacco industry has increased marketing spending by 37.3% from 1994 to 1998.

Tobacco industry marketing includes product packaging design, advertising and promotional activities intended to maximize sales, revenue and profits with no regard for the horrific consequences faced by their target audiences—girls and women.

Tobacco companies keep media outlets on the payroll by sponsoring women's fashion, artistic, athletic and political events, and media. Tobacco industry criticism is muted; the media stifle coverage of the adverse health consequences of smoking and tobacco use.
