The risks associated with HIV may be due to the underlying relationship between smoking and high-risk sexual behavior, the biological effects of smoking, or both.

The risk for HIV infection appears to increase with the number of cigarettes smoked.

The influence of smoking on the progression of the disease is currently being studied.
