For women younger than 50, the majority of coronary heart disease is attributable to smoking. The risk increases with the duration of smoking and quantity of smoking.

Smoking cessation results in a substantial reduction in risk of coronary heart disease among women one to two years later.

The combination of smoking and use of oral contraceptives leads to an elevated risk of coronary heart disease among women.
