In 1998, 8% of women and 12.9% of men had tried smoking by the age of 12.

For women born from 1931 to 1940, the average age of smoking initiation was 19.3 years. The average age of smoking initiation continues to drop; for women born from 1976 to 1979 the mean age of smoking initiation is 15.8 years.
