This ad sounds the theme of independence, the tune consistently played by Virginia Slims. The two-page format is an especially strong attempt to lure younger women because it is almost a cause and effect message: smoke and whatever you want is yours. You can be attractive, slim, sexy—and in control. All you have to do is smoke.

The model's dark good looks also were chosen to help certain women identify closely with her. Perhaps Native Americans, whose smoking rates are at the top of all other ethnic minorities?
