Even today, despite the overwhelming evidence regarding the addictiveness of tobacco, the tobacco industry executives continue to deny the harmful effects of their product.
A lawsuit filed by the Canadian government in December 1999 alleges that R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings, affiliated companies, and the Canadian Tobacco Manufacturers' Council were involved in a conspiracy to smuggle legally exported Canadian cigarettes back into the country to avoid Canadian taxes. More than 20 people, including a top R.J. Reynolds executive, pled guilty to smuggling-related charges. |
