Brief History of Tobacco Advertising to Women

As more and more communities are electing to restrict smoking in public places, tobacco companies are looking to galvanize their constituents. This ad, one of a series from Benson & Hedges, encouraged smokers to see the "humor" in the restrictions and encouraged their loyalty to smoking. The cigarette company developed and promoted a program that would create smoking and nonsmoking sections in workplaces and restaurants called the Accommodation Program.

The Accommodation Program was intended to neutralize the impact of health initiatives and tried to link smoking to issues such as discrimination, freedom, and independence. These ads of course completely ignored the basic piece of scientific fact missing from all of their campaigns - tobacco kills.
