"Just for Girls"

Smoking cigars causes cancers of the lip, tongue, mouth, larynx, esophagus, and lung and is associated with cancer of the pancreas. Many of these cancers have extremely low cure rates.

Daily cigar smokers have similar levels of risk for these cancers as cigarette smokers.

Cigar smoking, particularly among those who inhale also causes chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and coronary heart disease.

There are a number of reasons for the recent popularity of cigars such as clever advertising, invitation only smoker nights, and cigar-of-the-month clubs.

The lack of understanding by the public of the dangers of cigar smoking and celebrity glamorization of cigar smoking also contribute to the rising popularity of cigars.

Suggested Interactive Activities:

  • Show pictures of cancers of the mouth, lip, tongue to illustrate how dangerous cigar smoking can be.
  • Have the girls collect pictures of celebrities smoking cigars.
  • Have the girls write group letters to their favorite celebrities who smoke cigars urging them to stop.
