"Just for Girls"

Cartoons appeal to children more than they do to adults.

The tobacco company R. J. Reynolds created Joe Camel, a cartoon character that is as recognizable to children as Mickey Mouse. Though no longer used in ads in this country, Joe Camel is still a very effective marketing ploy to get children to accept cigarette smoking. Along with the ads, the R. J. Reynolds offered all kinds of promotional items to smokers, items particularly appealing to kids such as charm bracelets, rings, and pocket knives.

Suggested Interactive Activities:

  • Have girls collect any Joe Camel (or other trinkets with cigarette logos) for display.
  • Talk about the tobacco companies' motives for making these items.
  • Have a lung cancer survivor discuss what it's like to undergo chemotherapy.
