Smoking Cessation Approaches & Options

Zyban is currently the only nonnicotine drug approved by the FDA for smoking cessation. However, a number of other compounds are being studied for their use as nonnicotine approaches to smoking cessation.

  • Methoxsalen is a drug used to treat psoriasis that is known to inhibit the enzyme cytochrome P450 2A6. P450 2A6 is responsible for processing nicotine into its active byproduct cotinine and for changing the precancerous compounds in tobacco smoke into their cancerous forms.

  • Nortriptyline hydrochloride is a tricyclic antidepressant currently being evaluated as a smoking cessation aid.

The University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine has announced a pilot study of a mouth rinse that distorts the taste of cigarette smoke and makes it repellent. The rinse does not contain nicotine or any other drug.
