Nicotine gum increased 12-month abstinence rates by between 40% and 60% compared with placebo-gum or no-gum conditions. Dosing information:
- Nicotine gum is available in 2 mg and 4 mg (per piece) dosages.
- Smokers should choose 2 vs. 4 mg depending on the number of cigarettes smoked per day.
- Refer to the Physician’s Desk Reference or package insert for detailed dosing information.
Gum users tend to taper their use quickly.
Clinicians need to be aware that a some gum chewers become gum addicts.
Gum can be successfully combined with the patch for “craving emergencies” and for patients who need a “mouth” activity.
Be sure the nicotine gum is used correctly; i.e., bite down on a piece twice, then do not chew for about one minute. Repeat this once each minute for 20-30 minutes. Do not use acidic beverages while gum is being used.
