Clinicians should ask and record the tobacco-use status of every patient
In addition, we recommend that clinicians include:
- at what age patient began smoking
- past four years of smoking history
- exposure to second-hand smoke as a child and as an adult for those who have smoked and those who have not
- history of cancer incidence in the family, especially lung cancer
