  • Use AHCPR's Clinical Practice Guidelines on Smoking Cessation
  • Use the National Cancer Institute’s “4 A’s” in counseling patients:
    • Assess
    • Advise
    • Assist
    • Arrange Follow-up
  • Tailor the “Stages of Change” model in counseling patients to quit smoking
