How to Use the Speakers Kit
This Speakers Kit is designed to make it easy for physicians to give presentations on lung health promotion to African American lay audiences. Speakers need to select the slides for their presentations based on the information the speaker believes would be of interest and of use to the audience.
The Goal of the Kits
Depending on the slides selected for the talk, the presentation should help people in the audience learn how to:
- Maintain healthy lungs.
- Identify lung diseases early.
- Obtain appropriate care for lung problems.
The presentation also will enable the speaker to be introduced to the community as a health resource.
Focused and Brief Presentations Are Appreciated
In general, a presentation of 15 to 20 minutes followed by time for audience questions is optimum. That means that each presentation should use about 15 to 20 slides from the set. The slides introduce the topic, and the audience then can ask specific questions that tailor the information to their lives.
Putting the Talk Together
The Slides along with the Speaker Notes can be used to develop a presentation. Start by deciding who the audience will be and then decide what they might like to hear. Identify the actions recommended in your slides and summarize your talk at the end by listing these actions.
For example, a group of pregnant women may want to learn about how the lungs work, why they need to stop smoking, the effects of secondhand smoke, and ways to lower the chances of SIDS.
At a presentation to an older population in September, you could begin with an introduction about the lungs and details about one or more chronic lung diseases. You could then follow this with a discussion of the flu and pneumonia, and the importance of obtaining shots to prevent these diseases.
The slides and notes were prepared to be as free from medical jargon as possible. Avoid introducing medical jargon, unless you feel people need to know such terminology to talk with their doctors. |
